Intranets
Intranets - its a bit like having your own in house miniature version of
the world wide web. At this early point in the information revolution,
most smaller offices issue their staff with a standard desktop computer,
install a mixed bunch of proprietry software, wordprocessors,
spreadsheets, data entry applications and so on and hope for the best.
Life in this model is familiar to us all. Computer support and
technicians are regular visitors as computers crash, become iinfected with
viruses and data scattered in many and varied places in closed formats is
lost. Software upgrades appear to be mandatory, constant and somewhat
problematic since sotware updates often require hardware upgrades as well.
Reliance on proprietry software also locks the business into a brandname
that may or may not be around in the future. There are businesses out
there which are STILL struggling with thousands of wordperfect documents
not yet converted to Word format. If the receptionist is writing letters
and storing them on his/her computer, how difficult is it for the
department head to find and finally read or alter and reprint it? Does the point of
sale data sit somewhere else in an accounting package not readable by any
application other than that accounting package?
Do you have an emailing list stored in Outlook Express version 5 and the
boss uses outlook XP while the travelling sales rep uses a portable
version of foxmail?
Intranets are a way of making all company data available on a secure
internal website for all staff to access using ordinary browsers, or, in
some cases, browser based applications written in any of a range of open
standard languages. Mail outs are done through it, reports are read from
it, product and sales information is found on it, internal memos are sent
through it. Anyone duly authorised can connect to it and become part of
the intranet. Even high throughput Point of Sale can be operated through
it.
If a significant nightmare for you is the fragility and expense of your
information technology, perhaps it is time to consider an Intranet.
